What Are the Most Suitable Crops for Vertical Farming?

So you’ve been learning about vertical farming, and you’re ready to get started, but what types of plants should you grow? There are a few considerations to take into account, and if you don’t choose carefully, you may fail in your endeavor. But how do you select crops, and which should you consider? Read on to find out.

Factors to Consider

When choosing crops for your vertical farm, there are several questions you should be asking.

  1. Will it grow in your preferred growing system?

  2. How long will it take to grow from seed to harvest?

  3. Is there a market for it?

You may find an option that grows well and quickly in your preferred system but has little value on the market. Or you might consider a crop that will grow and sell well, but take so long to harvest that you’ll go bankrupt before you earn any income. A crop that grows slowly can still be an option if the margins to sell it are high enough, and you can afford to fund your system until it sells.

This article will assume you’re growing in a hydroponic vertical greenhouse, similar to those created by Eden Green Technology. If you’re using a different type of system, seek advice for that specific vertical farm type.

Best Crops for Vertical Farming

In general, two categories of crops stand out as the best and quickest options for a hydroponic vertical farm. Herbs and microgreens are preferred for their quick growing times and excellent suitability to hydroponic systems. Leafy greens are a close second as they also grow quickly and adapt well to the system.

Herbs and Microgreens

Herbs and microgreens are always popular choices for indoor gardening because they’re compact and fast growing. Nearly any of them can work in a hydroponic vertical farming operation, but these are the most popular:

  • Various varieties of basil are excellent choices for their versatility and ease of growing.

  • Cilantro, sometimes called coriander, is a favorite for several types of cuisine.

  • Several types of mint, including peppermint, do well in hydroponic systems.

  • Oregano is another popular and versatile herb for hydroponic growing.

  • A favorite herb for home chefs, Rosemary works well in nearly any growing system.

Leafy Greens

Leafy greens are popular for all sorts of reasons. In the world of vertical farming, they tend to be quick-growing and ideally suited for most hydroponic systems. In the category of leafy greens, there are several options you should consider.

  • Various members of the chard family, including rainbow chard or swiss chard, are excellent options.

  • Lettuces are a favored option as they are typically preferred for salads and sandwiches. Consider arugula, butterhead, red leaf lettuce, and romaine, and you’ll always be able to find buyers.

  • Kales are enjoying high popularity due to their high nutritional value.

Spinach is useful in many recipes, and also makes for a nutrient-packed salad.
