Partnership Between Eden Green Technology and Sharing Excess Targets U.S. Food Insecurity
Eden Green Technology, an innovator in the field of indoor vertical farming, recently announced a partnership with Sharing Excess, a nonprofit organization focused on combating food insecurity. This collaboration aims to strengthen Eden Green’s extensive food donation program, which has already resulted in the donation of over 365,000 pounds of hydroponic lettuce.
Context of Food Insecurity in the U.S.
Food insecurity remains a critical issue in the United States. According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), approximately 17 million households, or 12.8%, reported food insecurity in 2022. This figure represents a 22% increase from previous years. Food banks, a key resource in this context, often have limited access to fresh and nutritious food options, relying primarily on processed foods.
Eden Green’s Contribution and Strategy
Eden Green Technology has focused on providing healthy, reliable produce as a core part of its mission. The company’s first commercial greenhouse, opened in Cleburne, Texas in 2022, utilizes vertical greenhouse technology to facilitate year-round production of fresh lettuce, with plans to include herbs starting February 2024. The partnership with Sharing Excess is intended to streamline and expand Eden Green’s charitable efforts, potentially allowing for donations of up to 10,000 pounds of produce weekly in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
